The Exam

The exam itself consist of 3 parts;

The Reading Exam: This section is 1 hour and relies heavily on your reading comprehension skills. You will answer questions based on 3 different articles to show that you can read and understand the information presented to you.

The Writing Exam: This section is also 1 hour and is taken alongside the Reading section. It will be marked based on your spelling, punctuation, and grammar and consist of 2 situational questions. As well as your sentences and paragraph structure, and your ability to write effectively and the clarity of your writing.

The Speaking, Listening and Communication Exam (SLC): This section is only 30 minutes long and is where you will produce a presentation, then will present it to the examiner and a group of people. The marks will come from the clarity of the presentation and the effectiveness of how you have presented it. As well as how you go about communicating with the examiner and the other people.

The Qualification

When you have sat your exam, you will have to wait for a couple of days/weeks for your results. Once they have arrived and you have passed your English exam, you will receive your qualification! The qualification itself is equivalent to a PASS grade (C/4) in GCSE English. Useful if you desire to gain access to:

  • University
  • College
  • Apprentiships
  • Higher level jobs
  • And other course routes

The Functional Skills Level 2 Maths qualification allows for this as most of the above will require at least a PASS grade in GCSE English. Which the Functional Skills qualification is the equivalent of, so it can be used instead of a GCSE qualification. Helping those who, for whatever reason, don’t already meet the criteria
