What are Past Papers?
The Past Papers Exams that were taken in the past that are now not used anymore. They are not used by people as revision material in their preparation for their Maths Exam. They give a great idea of what it will be like to take the exam, as well as they will give you a good idea of what will be covered in the Maths exam.
Because of the many different exam boards, there are also a large variation of Past Papers for Maths. The Main change been the timing and the format of the exam. The exam does however cover the core skills:
- Numbers and the number system
- The usage of measures, shapes, and spaces
- The handling of information/data
On top of this, the marks of the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Exam are:
- 25% assigned to underpinning skills
- 75% assigned to problem solving

A big thing to consider when looking around for Maths Past Papers is that the specification was reformed in 2019, so any Past Papers would be useless. However our Past Papers are quality tested and all used after 2019, so you can be assured that they will be perfect for you.
How to use Past Papers
To get the most out of your Past Papers, we recommend mimicking the exam conditions. This consists of:
- No one in the room
- Not having anything open on your device other then the paper (no searching for answers!!)
- No resources/notes
- No mobile phone
- No breaks while taking the paper
- No distractions (Music, ect.)
Allowing you to receive the most accurate experience of what it’s like to take the Maths exam. By doing the things above during the paper, you prevent yourself from having the temptation to cheat, which will not give you an accurate idea of your current knowledge in the subjects. Important as it will help you see where your strengths and weaknesses are, helping you to optimize your revision time.
As A quick note, we also recommend giving yourself a time limit when taking the Past Paper. A key skill of taking the Maths exam is time management, so by timing yourself you will be able to see how much time you should spend on questions.
To further the usefulness of the Past Papers, each one will come with its own individual marking scheme, as no one will be making the papers for you. While at first, this would seem like a chore, in actuality it allows the unique opportunity of being able to see exactly what subjects you are weak/strong in. It shows how you failed in the question, and how the question should have been answered.
Just so you are aware, however, it is extremely important to not start utilizing the Maths Past Papers immediately when you are starting your revision. The Past Papers will be just as hard as the actual exam, so we recommend first gaining confidence and understanding in the subjects covered in the exam. Therefore reducing the chance of having your confidence negatively impacted and feeling discouraged if you fail.
